olryb was established in 1993 in Maszkow, Poland, and from the beginning has been engaged in the pre-processing of Baltic and freshwater fish. The plant is located in close proximity to the ports of Kolobrzeg, Darlowo and Ustka, which makes it possible to use the catches of local fishing vessels on an ongoing basis. At the start, the company employed 10 people and carried out production on the basis of its own facilities: a production hall, warehouses for fresh and frozen fish, social rooms and transportation. It currently employs about 70 people (depending on the season) and continues to expand.

Within the framework of the Operational Program "Fisheries and Sea" 2014-2020, Polryb implemented a project aimed at the development and modernization of operations, in line with the principles of sustainable development and efficient use of resources. The program was a key instrument of financial support for the fisheries and fish processing sector in Poland, co-financed by the European Union.

Thanks to the implementation of the project within the framework of the Operational Program "Fisheries and Sea" 2014-2020, Polryb not only modernized its production processes, but also strengthened the ecological nature of its operations, supporting sustainable fishing and responsible use of marine resources.

Polryb was established in 1993 in Mashkovo as a family business founded by Krzysztof Parfianowicz. From the beginning, the company has been engaged in the pre-processing of Baltic and freshwater fish. In 2003-2004, thanks to the SAPARD program, the plant underwent extensive modernization and was authorized to trade on EU markets. Production lines, warehouses and welfare facilities were upgraded, which enabled the development of fresh and frozen fish production. Subsequent investments, made with EU funds among others, included further mechanization and expansion of the plant. In 2007, the company was transformed into Polryb Sp. z o.o., retaining its family character. It currently employs 50-70 people and sells domestically and exports.

Challenge

Automation and precision in a demanding fish processing environment

The goal of the project was to implement solutions that enable full automation and integration of packaging, detection, weighing and labeling processes, while maintaining the highest precision. Fish processing is characterized by high variability of products in terms of weight, structure and moisture content, which places high demands on measurement and control systems.

Process repeatability, continuity of production line operation and compliance with strict hygiene and quality standards were also critical.

Additional challenges included harsh environmental conditions: low temperature, high humidity and intensive cleaning procedures, requiring technological solutions with high resilience, reliability and the ability to easily integrate with existing production infrastructure.

Solution

Precision solutions from Bizerba and Ulma tailored to the requirements of the fish industry

An in-depth analysis of the production processes at Polryb Sp. z o.o. has allowed the Bizerba and ULMA teams to design solutions that are ideally suited to the plant's requirements - both in terms of packaging types and production rates. Bizerba and ULMA equipment now operate at a key point in the line: the end of the line, where packaging, detection, weighing and labeling of finished products takes place.

ULMA's TSA875 traysealer is a modified atmosphere packaging line that combines high productivity with energy savings and great flexibility in the choice of packaging materials. The device ensures perfectly sealed and airtight packaging, reduces film consumption and helps preserve the freshness and aesthetic appearance of products.

The Bizerba iMD pro detector controls the trays passing through the machine, working in conjunction with the GLM-Ievo 1T1B weighing and labeling system and GLPmaxx 80/160 summation printers, which apply labels to the packages. The TU100 liner table maintains the order of bulk packages by separating individual packages so that they do not mix between cartons.

Thanks to the implemented Bizerba and Ulma solutions, the production process at the plant has become more efficient and transparent. Errors were reduced, reporting was streamlined and the level of automation was increased. The system's intuitive operation allowed staff to be trained quickly and facilitated daily work with the new solution.
