1
What exactly is LeakSecure, and what problem does it solve for food manufacturers?
Carole Besnard |

LeakSecure is an in-line leak detection system designed for Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) trays that use CO₂. Packaging needs to stay perfectly sealed to keep food fresh throughout its shelf life. Even small leaks—caused by tiny holes or faulty seals—can let gas escape, leading to spoilage. Traditionally, leaks have been found through destructive, off-line testing, which isn’t always effective. LeakSecure solves this by automatically checking every package on the production line, ensuring only perfectly sealed products reach the consumer.

2
Who benefits the most from using LeakSecure?
Carole |

LeakSecure is ideal for any food producer using MAP with CO₂—think fresh meat, poultry, seafood, cheeses, baked goods, ready-to-eat meals, snacks, and more. If you need to guarantee shelf life and safety, especially with sensitive or high-value products, LeakSecure is a valuable tool.

3
How does LeakSecure differ from other leak detection systems out there?
Carole |

LeakSecure stands out because it combines leak detection and visual seal inspection in a single device, especially when paired with our SealSecure solution. It’s unaffected by CO₂ fluctuations in the production environment and can pinpoint exactly where a defect is. The system is also remarkably compact—just 300 mm wide—making it easy to integrate into existing lines, and it’s designed to be simple for operators to use.

4
What are the most common causes of leaks in MAP packaging, and how does LeakSecure address them?
Carole |

With thinner packaging films being used to reduce plastic, packages are more fragile—especially at corners and seams. This makes them vulnerable to tiny holes or breaks. LeakSecure applies pressure to each tray and uses advanced CO₂ sensors to detect and locate leaks immediately after sealing. By identifying where issues happen most, manufacturers can improve both their processes and the materials they choose.

5
How does integrating LeakSecure with other Bizerba systems, like SealSecure, enhance inspection?
Carole |

By combining LeakSecure with SealSecure, food producers get comprehensive inspection for both seal integrity and leaks in one streamlined step. You can also add label verification, ensuring each package is fully compliant and safe. This all-in-one approach simplifies quality control and minimizes the risk of defective products reaching customers.

6
What impact does LeakSecure have on line efficiency and operational costs?
Carole |

LeakSecure inspects every package automatically, removing any that don’t meet standards right away. This reduces waste, cuts down on costly rework, and saves materials and energy. Real-time monitoring helps catch production issues early, while automated reporting supports process optimization. Ultimately, the system helps boost productivity and lets staff focus on more valuable tasks.

7
How easy is it to implement LeakSecure on an existing line?
Carole |

LeakSecure is designed for quick integration with a very small footprint, so it fits seamlessly into most production lines. The software is intuitive, automatically adjusts to different tray heights, and doesn’t require frequent calibration. Most teams find the setup process straightforward, with only minimal training needed.

Conclusion

Our discussion with Carole highlights the growing importance of reliable leak detection as packaging materials become thinner and food safety standards rise. Solutions like LeakSecure allow food producers to automatically identify and remove defective packages in real time, minimizing waste and protecting both consumers and brand reputation. By integrating leak detection with seal inspection, Bizerba offers a practical, efficient answer to today’s packaging challenges—helping manufacturers deliver safe, high-quality products every time.
